A Day in the Life - Foundation Hive

A Day in the Life of Foundation Hive
Our Foundation year blends purpose and play for our Hive students in a rhythm that nurtures identity, curiosity, and belonging—underpinned by Australian Curriculum essentials and Reggio-inspired methodologies.
The environment—bright, open, full of materials—is our third teacher, sparking ideas and supporting independence. Teachers document learning through photos and thoughtful notes, making progress visible.
We follow ACARA’s Foundation Year framework emphasising identity, wellbeing, communication, and connection, all while allowing children to lead their learning story. Music, Art, PE and other specialist experiences offer our Foundation students ample opportunities for enriched, holistic development.
Session 1 – Morning Flow: Begin with Wonder
- Morning routine: roll call, a short devotion, and a few stretches to awaken bodies and hearts.
- Literacy Groups: Students work in small, targeted groups tailored to their literacy needs to begin the exciting journey of life-long literacy!
Session 2 – Midday: Learning in Motion
- Project Based Learning and Numeracy in context: children naturally count blocks, draw story maps, or use labels—embedding literacy and numeracy across play, not as standalones. ACARA confirms that strong early literacy and numeracy underpin all learning.
- Emergent projects: educators follow children’s interests and guide exploratory projects. This is central to the Reggio Emilia approach: children’s wonder drives learning.
- Open learning zone: children choose experiences across art, blocks, or sensory corners. Teachers observe and join—co-constructing learning based on each child’s spark of interest.
Session 3 – Afternoon: Reflect, Create, Connect
- Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading, Story time & reflection: children have silent individual readying time, gather for storytelling or show-and-tell, sharing discoveries and practices in listening and communication.
Why This Matters for Your Child
In Foundation, learning isn’t confined to worksheets—it’s an experience shaped by relationships, curiosity, and intentional play. Your child will:
- Build a strong sense of identity and community, knowing they belong and matter.
- Become a confident communicator, using words, art, movement, and ideas.
- Develop early literacy and numeracy naturally, through meaningful, joyful interaction.
- Learn through wonder, deeply exploring their world and documenting their growth through attentive teaching and learning environments.
