A Day in the Life of Year 1 & 2 – 2026

At Living Waters Lutheran School this year, our Year 1 and 2 students are building strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy while discovering the joy of learning through play, projects, and community. Guided by the Australian Curriculum, our daily routine balances focused learning with creativity — helping every child grow as a confident and curious learner.

Morning Block (8:20am – 10:20am)

Morning Meeting

Each day begins with connection. Students start the morning with roll, devotion, and a short fitness session to help energise their minds and bodies for the day ahead.

Literacy Groups

This year, students work in small, targeted literacy groups designed to support their individual learning needs. These groups are regularly reviewed to ensure students continue to make progress.

Students are developing their skills in:

  • Reading fluency and comprehension– decoding words, predicting, retelling, and expanding vocabulary.
  • Writing – constructing sentences, using punctuation correctly, applying spelling strategies, and developing handwriting.
  • Speaking and listening – sharing ideas, responding to others, and asking questions to deepen understanding.

Focus for this year: Students are learning how language works, how to create and respond to texts, and how to communicate their ideas clearly.

Middle Block (11:00am – 1:00pm)

Number Fluency Program

Each maths session begins with 10 minutes of number fluency practice. Students work on counting patterns, number relationships, and quick recall to strengthen their number sense.

Mathematics in Action

We implement a hands-on approach when teaching mathematics. Students rotate through maths activities in small groups. These activities focus on:

  • Number and Algebra– addition, subtraction, place value, and patterns (2, 5 and 10 times tables).
  • Measurement and Geometry– shapes, time, length, and capacity
  • Statistics and Probability – sorting information, exploring chance, and interpreting simple data

Project-Based Learning (PBL)

This year students are exploring a range of Project-Based Learning units that integrate Science, HASS, Technology, Numeracy and Literacy. Through these projects, students investigate real-world topics while applying their reading, writing, and maths skills in meaningful ways.

Afternoon Block (1:40pm – 2:50pm)

Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading

Students spend 15 minutes engaged in sustained silent reading to build reading stamina, confidence, and a love of books.

Afternoon Subjects (rotating across the week)

  • Bounce Back– building resilience, social skills, and learning strategies
  • Christian Studies – exploring God’s Word and learning about sin and grace
  • Culture with Ms Crystal – learning Arrernte language and culture
  • Specialist Subjects – Physical Education and Library

What students are working towards this year

By the end of Year 2, students will:

  • Read with increasing fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment
  • Write structured sentences and short texts with confidence
  • Use maths strategies to solve problems and explain their thinking
  • Develop curiosity and confidence across a wide range of learning experiences
  • Grow socially, emotionally, and spiritually as part of a Christ-centred learning community

At Living Waters this year, our students are developing strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy while experiencing creative, cultural, and faith-filled learning that supports them to grow and flourish as learners.
