A Day in the Life - 1/2 Village

A Day in the Life of Year 1 & 2

At Living Waters Lutheran School, our Year 1 and 2 students build strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy while exploring the joy of learning through play, projects, and community. Guided by the Australian Curriculum, our daily rhythm balances focus with creativity — helping every child flourish as a confident, curious learner.

Morning Block (8:20am – 10:20am)

Morning Meeting
We begin the day with connection — roll, a devotion, and fitness to energise minds and bodies.

Literacy Groups
Students work in small, targeted groups tailored to their literacy needs. Regularly reviewed, these groups ensure progress in:

  • Reading fluency & comprehension - decoding, predicting, retelling, vocabulary
  • Writing - building sentences, punctuation, spelling strategies, handwriting
  • Speaking & listening - sharing ideas, responding, asking questions.

Key learning outcome – students learn how language works, how to create and respond to texts, and how to communicate effectively.

Middle Block (11:00am – 1:00pm)

Number Fluency Program
Every session starts with 10 minutes of daily practice in number sense, counting patterns, and quick recall — building confidence and flexibility with numbers.

Mathematics in Action
Students rotate through hands-on, small-group maths activities targeting:

  • Number & Algebra – addition, subtraction, place value, patterns
  • Measurement & Geometry – shapes, time, length, capacity
  • Statistics & Probability – sorting, chance, and interpreting simple data.

Project-Based Learning (PBL)
Before break, students explore PBL Units integrating Science, HASS, Technology, and Literacy. These projects build critical thinking and creativity while giving students a chance to apply reading, writing, and maths in real-world contexts.

Aligned to General Capabilities and Cross-Curriculum priorities – students develop fluency, understanding, and reasoning while applying maths to everyday situations.

Afternoon Block (1:40pm – 2:50pm)

Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading
15 minutes of sustained silent reading builds resilience, stamina, and a lifelong love of literacy.

Afternoon Subjects (rotating across the week):

  • Bounce Back – Social & emotional learning, resilience, and “learning how to learn.”
  • Christian Studies – Exploring God’s Word and the life of Jesus.
  • Culture with Ms Tanisha – Learning Arrernte language and culture.
  • Specialist Subjects – PE & Music with Mr Armstrong, Art with Dr Emma, Library with Ms Mel.

Why this matters for your child

By the end of Year 2, students will:

  • Read with growing fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment.
  • Write structured sentences and short texts with confidence.
  • Use maths flexibly to solve problems, describe patterns, and explain thinking.
  • Cultivate confidence and curiosity across a range of learning experiences.
  • Grow socially, emotionally, and spiritually as part of a Christ-centred, child-focused community.

At Living Waters, every day balances strong foundations in Literacy and Numeracy with creative, cultural, and faith-filled learning — helping children flourish in every sense.
